Episode #16 (June 13, 2011): Youth Ministry

Today we welcome Colm Leyne, the Coordinator of Youth Ministries for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saskatoon, for a discussion about parish youth ministry.

Some topics we discussed:

  • Goals for youth ministry: help young people to belong to the community, become active in it, and transform themselves and the world.
  • A great document about youth ministry from the USCCB: Renewing the Vision
  • The importance of presence and relational ministry. We need to listen to those whom we serve!
  • Know your audience: youth ministry to someone in grade 6 is not the same as it would be for someone in grade 12
  • The relationship between religious education and youth ministry.
  • The importance of staying current, relatable, and authentic in working with young people.
  • The internet is a great tool and we need to be involved! But it cannot replace real-life presence.
  • The hunger in our young people for authenticity and meaning is a reason for enthusiasm and hope!
  •
Song of the week: Oh Why Did You? by Saskatoon artist Sarah Farthing
